Our Residents
All our residents have struggled with serious mental illness for many years. Those living at Beverley House have experienced the additional burden of homelessness. The supportive environment of our homes enable our residents to live in the community and enjoy quality of life.
Here is a story told by one of our residents:
“Before I moved into Hillholm House, I was a patient at a local mental health centre. I was enduring a long stay there trying to recover from my psychosis. Fortunately, medications and cognitive therapy stabilized my condition and it was time to move back into the community.
“I was shown some pretty horrendous housing options in the community. Boarding homes with 30 to 40 people living in them, where people lived on top of one another and had no privacy for themselves.
“Luckily, I had the opportunity to see Hillholm House - a large, clean, beautiful home, in a safe and welcoming neighbourhood. Ten people share the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, shopping, and living together as a caring community. We are fortunate to have our own private bedroom at Hillholm House. It is truly a wonderful home, staffed by caring individuals, helping the residents gain independence. I am very fortunate to live here and I think my housemates feel this way as well.”
Another one of our residents said...:
"All my years I had been in and out of institutions. It has been a dream of mine to find a place that I could call my own."
"Without Beverley House, I didn't think I had anything to look forward to. But now, my dreams are coming true and if I can make it in this world, I know other people can too. If I can have a dream, anyone can have a dream and dreams do come true."
